Caspian Sea Transport

Caspian Shipping Routes

Translog offers Caspian Sea shipping solutions between ports on the Sea of Marmara and Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, Kazakhstan and Iran's Bandar Anzali port.

Sea transport is combined with road and rail operations in the Caspian Sea region and neighbouring countries. Transport is planned for heavy and bulky project cargo such as reactors, TBMs, steel structures, machinery and equipment, barges and boats, as well as bulk and containerised cargo.

River–Sea Vessel Solutions

Transport solutions using river–sea vessels with capacities in the 3,000–5,000 tonne range are offered. Shallow draught and vessel dimensions enable movement in shallow waters.

The Volga–Don Canal route is used for Caspian shipments during spring and summer. When the canal is closed to navigation, alternatives with road and rail connections via ports such as Poti and Batumi are planned.

Sailing dates, canal passages and available routes are confirmed with the operations team before loading.

Logistics Connections Between Türkiye and the Caspian

Caspian Sea transport requires Turkish ports and delivery points in the Caspian region to be assessed together through sea, river and road connections. Translog offers solutions for shipping between ports on the Sea of Marmara and the Caspian region, alongside connected operations.

Operating conditions differ across destinations such as Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Iran's Bandar Anzali port. Transport planning therefore considers loading and discharge ports and the final delivery address, rather than the country name alone. If onward road or rail transport is required after arrival at the port, that stage is included in the plan from the outset.

The appropriate route for Caspian transport is determined by cargo characteristics and available connections. Sea transport combined with regional road and rail operations is an important part of an integrated service approach.

Heavy, Bulky and Other Cargo Types

Shipments to the Caspian region can include industrial project cargo as well as bulk and containerised cargo. Reactors, TBMs, steel structures, machinery and equipment, barges and boats have different transport requirements. Individual dimensions and weights are important when assessing vessel space and loading methods.

Suitable overall capacity alone is not enough for heavy or bulky cargo. Cargo positioning aboard the vessel, lifting equipment at the port and onward connection requirements after discharge must also be considered. Project cargo transport includes solutions for planning these technical requirements together.

A detailed cargo list helps assess whether different pieces should be transported together or in stages. Packaging, stacking and securing requirements also affect the scope of the operation. Necessary port stages are planned in conjunction with port services.

River–Sea Vessels and Route Conditions

Using river–sea vessels for Caspian shipments requires vessel specifications and route conditions to be assessed together. Shallow draught and vessel dimensions become important for shallow-water and canal connections. The vessel's suitability for the relevant passages is considered alongside cargo weight and space requirements.

The Volga–Don Canal connection is one of the routes considered when the canal is available. Opening periods, passage conditions and sailing availability must be confirmed before each operation. Historical periods or sailing information are not used as current transport commitments.

When the canal connection is unavailable, road and rail options via ports such as Poti and Batumi can be assessed. The appropriate alternative depends on the cargo and delivery point. For technical background, see the river–sea vessel specifications and river transport pages.

Caspian Shipment Enquiries and Planning

Please provide the origin, destination port or delivery address, cargo type, piece list and each item's dimensions and weight. Technical drawings and photographs support the assessment, particularly for out-of-gauge project cargo. State cargo readiness and delivery expectations separately.

Explain whether delivery should be assessed at the port or at the consignee's address. Include storage, loading and unloading needs and any road or rail connections in your enquiry. This allows the vessel operation and destination-region stages to be assessed together.

Freight costs, transit times and routes vary with sailing availability, passage conditions and cargo characteristics. For current options, contact the Translog operations team. The actual Caspian operation photographs on this page illustrate shipment stages for different cargo types.
